Preparing For The Worst Keeps You At Your Best!

“BE PREPARED, NOT SCARED”

Kingsville Residents,  

This page has been put together to inform you of the actions that can be taken to prepare you and your family in the event of an emergency.  The following information is to assist you and your community in the event of an emergency.  Please review and discuss this information with your family. Please print this page and keep it handy for quick reference in the case of an emergency.

DEVELOPING AN EMERGENCY

Meet with family members to develop an emergency plan and regularly conduct drills to practice your plan.

  • Become aware of emergency situations that can occur in your area.
  • Learn your community evacuation plan.
  • Determine safe rooms to use for shelter.
  • Post emergency phone numbers by the phone. During an emergency only use the phone if someone needs immediate assistance.
  • Teach children their address and phone number.
  • Note special assistance needed by people with disabilities.
  • Prepare for family health needs (medication, medical supplies, etc).
  • Learn basic CPR and First Aid.
  • Establish a meeting place if family is separated in an emergency.
  • Find out school/daycare’s emergency procedures.

FLOODING

  • Tune into local radio stations.
  • Stay away from flood waters. DO NOT attempt to walk, drive, or swim through flood waters.
  • If flood waters are high allow them to flow freely into your basement.
  • Do not stack sandbags against your house as this adds pressure and can cause damage.
  • Do not drink tap water.
  • Move valuables to higher floors.

SEVERE WEATHER (TORNADO)

TORNADO WATCH: A tornado watch or severe thunderstorm watch is issued whenever conditions exist for severe weather to develop. This is the time for you to prepare.  Tune into local radio or television stations for updates.

TORNADO WARNING: A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted or strongly indicated by radar.  This is the time to take proper cover.

  • Tune into local radio stations.
  • Stay indoors.
  • Seek shelter in basement or in an interior room.
  • Stay away from windows, doors and outside walls.

WINTER STORMS

  • Tune into local radio stations.
  • Stay indoors.
  • Watch for signs of frostbite or hypothermia.
  • Do NOT over exert yourself while shoveling.
  • Do not leave home unless absolutely necessary.
  • Wear loose fitting clothes and layer them as needed.
  • If travel is absolutely necessary be sure to have an emergency car kit with you.
  • Do not use barbecues or kerosene lanterns for indoor heating.

CHEMICAL ACCIDENTS

The possibility of a chemical spill or toxic fire are possible emergencies in the Town of Kingsville.

IF YOU ARE OUTSIDE:

  • Stay uphill, upwind and upstream.  Hazardous materials can by quickly transported by water and wind.
  • Move so the wind is blowing left to right, not at your back or face.
  • Try to get at least a half mile from the danger area.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.

IF YOU ARE INSIDE:

  • Tune into local radio stations and be prepared to follow all instructions given by emergency staff.
  • To reduce the possibility of toxic fumes entering your home, seal all entry routes as efficiently as possible.
  • Close and lock doors, seal gaps under doorways with wet towels and duct tape.
  • Close all fireplace dampers and turn off ventilation systems (air vents and furnaces).
  • Stay inside.
  • If you suspect vapours have entered your home, take shallow breaths through a wet towel or cloth.

PREPARING YOUR HOME

  • Secure important papers, lists and photographs in a safety deposit box.
  • Buy an ABC portable fire extinguishers.
  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside of all sleeping areas. Test the alarms monthly.
  • Install a carbon monoxide alarm and check functioning periodically.
  • Buy flashlights / emergency lighting and a battery operated radio and batteries or a crank radio.
  • Avoid using candles when possible. If they must be used, never leave them unattended.
  • Make your house address clearly visible.
  • Locate the water heater, electrical and gas shut offs and mark with labeled tape.
  • Make sure the sump pump is working and consider purchasing a back-up.

PREPARING TO EVACUATE

  • Tune into local media for further instructions.
  • Pack a bag with essential items, including clothing, medical essentials, wallet, credit cards, cash, driver’s license, health card and important documents.
  • Baby supplies and special foods.
  • Toilet articles.
  • Pillows, blankets and sleeping bags.
  • Battery operated radio, flashlights and extra batteris.

IN ORDER TO EVACUATE STAY CALM

  • Keep pets inside with food and water.
  • Lock all doors and windows.
  • Use evacuation routes as instructed.
  • Drive carefully, don’t rush.
  • Ask neighbours if they need a ride.
  • Register on arrival at the evacuation centre.

BY IGNORING THE WARNING TO EVACUATE YOU ARE JEOPARDIZING YOUR FAMILY AND THOSE THAT MIGHT HAVE TO SAVE YOU!

SCHOOL CHILDREN

DO NOT attempt to pick your children up at school. School staff will be informed of an emergency and the safety of your children will be top priority.  Media will inform you where to pick up your children when it is safe.

DISABLED AND THE ELDERLY

Please be sure to help disabled and elderly citizens in the community. Assist them in the event of an evacuation by giving them rides to shelters and helping them to pack a bag.

HAVE AN EMERGENCY SURVIVAL KIT READY WITH THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

Ensure you have a 3 day supply

  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Radio and batteries or crank radio
  • Spare batteries (for radio / flashlight)
  • First-aid kit
  • Candles and matches / lighter
  • Extra car keys and cash
  • Important papers (Identification)
  • Food and bottled water
  • Clothing and footwear
  • Blankets or sleeping bags
  • Toilet paper and other personal items
  • Medication
  • Whistle (to attract attention)
  • Playing cards, games, etc.
  • Backpack / duffel bag (to hold all of the above items)
